Hockey, India’s pride, didn’t really captivate me until the 5th Asian Hockey Tournament unfolded in my city, Bhopal. This event, involving eight Asian countries, had my dad’s department deeply involved, sparking my interest to witness it firsthand.
From April 3rd to 11th, the Aishbagh Stadium buzzed with excitement as China, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, UAE, Thailand, Singapore, and India vied for victory. The Asian School Sport Federation granted India the privilege of hosting this prestigious championship.
My chosen day to attend was during the semi-finals. India faced off against China, while Malaysia clashed with Singapore. Despite doubts looming over India’s chances, the team seemed determined to not let their country down. Amidst the crowd’s murmurs, the spectators’ armchair advice felt almost out of place.
In an astonishing turn, India secured an 11-0 win against China, a proud moment that silenced the naysayers. The players, cheered on by the crowd, shared a special moment with Ms. Dipti Gaur Mukherjee, Secretary of the School Education Department (M.P).
The finals beckoned, pitting India against Malaysia & China against Singapore. Although not a fervent hockey follower, I found myself rooting for India. The Indian School Team didn’t disappoint, sealing a convincing 5-1 victory and claiming the tournament title.
The tournament’s conclusion saw Singapore triumph over China in a nail-biting 3-1 shootout after a 1-1 deadlock in regular time.
This victory didn’t just raise goosebumps; it stirred a newfound respect for the game and the players. It was a moment that not only united the spectators but also instilled immense pride in India’s achievement.
